Biography
Maggie was brought up in North Cornwall. After running her own retail business in Cornwall, she decided to change course to concentrate on painting. She moved to London in 1992 and started a Fine Art degree at Wimbledon School of Art in 1995. After graduating she set up her studio in Cable Street, Limehouse; taking part in many group shows and art fairs in London. In September 2005 Maggie and her partner moved to the Welsh Borders.
Artist Statement
My paintings divide into several different series. I begin a painting with an idea, thought or memory which then takes on a life of its own and leads to a series of paintings, I keep going until I can’t think of anymore permutations of that idea. The titles are a clue, for example the Tidal paintings all derive from remembering my experiences of living by the sea in North Cornwall, sailing on it, surfing in it and walking beside it. The ‘Tidal Line’ series is about where two different depths of water meet the land, this series now numbers ten and is still growing. Since coming to live in Knucklas ten years ago, landscape and woodland have made their way onto the canvas. The series ‘Somewhere I might have been’ and ‘Defining Landscape’ are a combination of all those wooded places I have visited. Drawing on memory allows me to manipulate the original place so as to express my experience of it. Maggie Jones 2015
