Naked Landscapes

Aluminium, ink on canvas & board, 2007.

I had been waiting patiently for days for this warm overcast haze to lift, I wanted the clouds to reveal the high locations where I was originally inspired to create the pieces for the Alternative Pembrokeshire exhibition at West Wales Arts Centre, Fishguard. Instead a haunting dreamy atmosphere blanketed my view and what remained was a sweeping blur of faint colour illuminated by a mid day twilight.

The setting was the dramatic scenery along the B4313, the road from the gallery in Fishguard to the foundry in Clunderwen, West Wales. Having travelled along there countless times during the past five years it's become my favourite stretch of Pembrokeshire.

As you follow this winding route, amongst the twists and turns you become aware of the soft feminine curves that form the landscape, creating a scenic stretch that is nature’s beauty parade. As you look there are shapes that suggest a curve of a shoulder, an arch of a back or the hollow at the back of the knee, each bend in the road reveals a different pose, reclining, comfortable yet majestic in composure.
