Biography
Originally from Wolvehampton, Sally moved to the Forest of Dean in 2001 and was free to pursue her lifetime interest in painting. Over the years she has attended various Art classes and workshops including the Portfolio course at Hereford College of Arts.
Sally uses saturated colour and contrasting isomorphic lines to create an optical confusion that plays with perspective. Working instinctively she builds up layers of colour; using brushes, palette knives, plastic cards and bits of stick, splashing, squirting and spraying the paint on, creating soft blends and then contrasting them with sharp lines. Her lines can be straight, wavy, zigzags and spirals compartmentalising the canvas and highlighting the colours. Sally’s work has developed from more naturalistic beginning to Abstracts that mimic the shapes found in nature and immediately conjure a narrative. Sally has been influenced by the repeated patterns and colours of Gustav Klimt and has been inspired by the optical illusion properties of Bridget Riley’s work.
Artist Statement
I’m inspired by the countryside and what is around me. I try to make my paintings as bright and bold interpretations of landscape themes. The acrylic colours I choose are quite subjective and the manner of their application can vary considerably, from conventional brushes to splashing to chemical reactions etc. I am constantly looking at different methods to make my work my own.
