Biography

Sarah was born in Gloucester. She studied at Hereford Cathedral School from the age of 9 until she left, to start a MA in Fine Art at Edinburgh University. She has just completed her second year at Edinburgh and hopes to travel abroad in September to Munich, Germany to study for 6 months. Sarah’s artistic influences were born out of her GCSE days during school; Edvard Munch, Oscar Kokoshka and Tolouse Lautrec. She has also been influenced by such local artists as Graham Dean and Maggie Hambling: both artists with distinctive and original styles. Sarah is particularly drawn to Graham Dean’s use of the translucent, which, comes through in much of her recent work. 


Artist Statement

This collection of paintings is largely based on my experiences of particular places that I have recently visited. Place is important, it builds character, identity and memories. For me it is important to collate a set of visual memoirs of particular places, especially considering that I am currently studying at University far from home. I guess one could argue, why not just take a photograph? But I feel that my paintings tend towards an abstraction that can not be captured inside a camera. I find myself being attracted towards, for example, the naturally beautiful and unique colour of a situation, or purely the abstract shape of a scene. The painting that I then produce, I suppose, are representative as well as abstract, because I am representing with paint what my mind has already seen and abstracted.

In these paintings, I work using a combination of memory and photography. I also work in a mixed media, often straying far from the constraints of painting exclusively with a paintbrush.
