Biography

Juli grew up in the Lake District. After leaving school she worked in the textile industry as a spool setter for a carpet and rug manufacturer in Kendal, and as a sewing machinist making a variety of garments which included horse blankets, lingerie, bridal wear, fire fighting uniforms and tweeds. At the age of 23 she enrolled at Cumbria College of Art and Design in Carlisle and studied a foundation course in Art and Design, before studying Graphic Design specialising in Illustration in Bath. Since moving to Leominster in 2003 she has worked in a variety of community settings throughout Herefordshire and Powys; leading and designing Art and Craft workshops for adolescents, adults with mental health issues and children with learning Disabilities.  Juli now works as a Commended Picture Framer in The Framing Gallery in Leominster. Juli has had two exhibitions with us for h-art in the GreenStage and we have also successfully represented her at the Affordable Art Fair in Bristol 2008.   A Painting of Bristol Cathedral has been used on much of Bristol Cathedral's publicity for 2008 and 2009 and also as their Christmas card for 2008.   Juli has been shortlisted for the ‘2008 Canon and Art Business Today print to win competition’.  Juli has exhibited in the Stages Gallery Machynlleth, The Chapel Gallery, Pembridge and The Granary Tea Room in Leominster.

Artist Statement

Juli’s current work is focused on buildings.  Juli is very inspired by the life of a building and believes that all buildings have a certain energy of their own, which is independent of the way they are used by the people that inhabit them.  She likes colour and does not have a preconceived idea of how a particular image will end up.  Juli uses line, colour and texture instinctively with the aim of creating images which have a dramatic energy.  The use of texture is evident from the way she creates layers with the tissue and ink.
