Artist Profile - Chris Watts
Biography
Chris is a Herefordian born and bred; apart from his studies, he has always lived in the city. He studied Art and Design in Hereford before completing a BA in Metals at West Surrey College of Art & Design. In 1997 after a six year break from education he enrolled at Christ Church University College, Canterbury and was duly awarded his Master of Fine Arts (painting) in 1999. Chris initially worked mainly in metal, but now prefers painting although continues to be fascinated by edges. He uses mathematical principles to create patterns, articulating the surface with relief, colour, rhythm and light. He describes his work as geometric abstraction, and cites modernist figures such as Mondrain, Nicholson and Le Corbusier as influential to his ideas. Chris has exhibited up and down the country with notable solo shows in Cardiff, Bath and Worcester. His work can frequently be seen exhibited with the Herefordshire Arts and Craft Society, which he is secretary of.
