Artist Profile - Rebecca Stidson
Biography
Rebecca was born in Somerset where she has lived and worked most of her life. She studied A Level Art before doing an Art Foundation Course at Yeovil Art College. Rebecca still lives in the village where she was born. After gaining a distinction in her foundation course Rebecca left Somerset to travel around Australia; where she continued to paint and draw. Whilst in Australia she first started to sell her work through shops and galleries. Upon returning to the UK Rebecca set up her own workshop and gallery at Broadwindsor Craft Centre in Dorset. After five years she gave up the workshop to spend more time at home with her family, continuing to paint from home exhibiting locally. She has recently set up a business selling her own handmade wedding stationary.
Artist Statement
During my time in Australia I was greatly inspired by the aboriginal paintings, their communication through the user of very simple naive shapes. I started using very rich vibrant colour, influenced by the climate, landscape and way of life.. My children are also an influence in my work as I love to paint in a way that they find interesting and can understand. I have always liked to paint in a style which is very decorative but can make you smile.
My paintings are created using a glue based paint to produce an embossed outline. I paint using a liquid acrylic on a very heavy watercolour paper that absorbs the colour and gives the vibrancy and glowing colour.
There are a variety of themes to my work– countryside scenes, decorative still life's, boats, light houses, beach huts and fairytale pictures. All depicted in my quirky often humorous style.
