Artist Profile - Jools Lawley
Biography
Jools studied graphic design in Stourbridge before graduating from St. Martin’s College, Lancaster with a BA in Art and Design. She now lives and works in Worcester. Her creative practice is an act of discovery and exploration that personally inspires and encourages relationships within the surface between colour, form and paint. Working on canvas the whole arm is used to create motion, initially working at pace, to generate an underlying base of expressive marks. These deliberate gestural marks although spontaneous are also deliberate in their intention and provide the structure for the successive layers.
Artist Statement
These paintings evolve over time following a repetitive process of layering, where a translucent surface quality emerges that engages you in the interplay of foreground and background. Brush stokes are purposely evident but they also become more definite in creating form and movement within the painting as the arcs of colour intentionally leave smooth, delicate and sensitive lines. The aim has been to create soft rhythmical paintings where what lies beneath is of equal importance to the surface.
