Artist Profile - Jenny Williams
Biography
Jenny was born in Surrey and grew up in Muswell Hill North London. She was awarded a scholarship to Hornsey College of Art where she completed her foundation and started her degree. She left halfway through the course after being offered a job as a Display Designer in central London. Jenny moved to Herefordshire in 1972, where she has taught, been a Display Manager for Chadds of Hereford and opened two fashion shops locally. She has recently returned to her artistic roots, although feels that her experience as a display designer, made her think in terms of strong colour and visual 3D space, almost using merchandise as paint. Jenny’s paintings are characterised by the bright colours, bold forms, and wonderful everyday narratives.
Artist Statement
“The narrative thread in my paintings, I believe comes from avidly reading as a youngster any book I could lay my hands on, which produced vivid pictures in my head. Being born into the drabness and austerity of post war London, then the life and colour of London in the 60’s.
A lot of drawing in and around London’s busy markets developing visual awareness.
The discipline of my work as a Display Designer making me think in terms of strong colour and visual 3D space using merchandise as I suppose, paint.
I think all of these things have gone into the melting pot over the years producing figurative narrative and abstract paintings with a rhythmic sense of colour and form.”
