Biography

David trained as a painter and printmaker at Reading University. He worked in various secondary schools before lecturing in Art Education, at Bretton Hall College at the University of Leeds, Yorkshire. In 1995 he retired to Church Stretton where he responded immediately to the surrounding landscapes of the Long Mynd and Shropshire Hills. He has become familiar with every distinctive feature and aspect of the landscape through walking the hills almost every day throughout the turning seasons.

Artist Statement

My paintings and etchings exhibited at Sanford Gallery and here at the GreenStage, arise directly from my experiences during walking. They refer especially to the light, colour and mood which are constantly changing and which make every walk distinctive, however many time I do a particular route. My second main source is the quite different landscape and seascape of the islands of the Inner Hebrides, one or other of which I visit each year. The paintings and etchings are developed from small, quickly drawn notes in my journal which attempt to capture the essential quality of landscape which D.H. Lawrence described as having "…a mysterious shiftiness…" together with a sense of permanence.

"… I wish to give to one brief moment plucked from fleeting time a lasting and sober existence…" (Constable)

The etchings have a complex printing process with multiple over printings making it difficult to produce editions of identical prints. Each one to a varying extent is a unique impression. Additional prints of those exhibited are available to order and are subject to the purchaser’s approval.
